A wildfire broke out near Agios Vasileios in Boeotia, Greece, on July 31, 2026, and later spread to West Attica. According to the investigation so far, swaying cables from a private wind farm power line generated sparks. These sparks ignited dry vegetation, while strong winds drove the fire across vast distances. More than 100 homes, as well as forests, olive groves, and agricultural land, were destroyed or damaged. Numerous communities had to be evacuated, and two crew members died in a collision between two firefighting helicopters.
Cause of fire not linked to the wind turbine itself
The Greek fire department explicitly clarified that neither a wind turbine nor any facility belonging to the wind farm triggered the fire. Instead, the fire originated at a private power line located approximately 500 meters away from the turbines. This line carried the generated electricity to the public grid. Therefore, describing it as a “fire caused by a wind turbine” would be technically inaccurate.

Fire investigators examined videos, witness statements, and evidence at the point of origin. A court-appointed electrical engineer also assisted with the technical assessment. Findings indicated that two power lines apparently began to oscillate violently, generating sparks in the process. A fire had already broken out near the same power line on June 27, though it was quickly extinguished.
Wildfire in Greece spreads to Attica
Strong, shifting winds significantly accelerated the wildfire in Greece. The fire front moved from Boeotia into western Attica, engulfing pine forests, fields, and residential areas. At times, more than 400 firefighters and 21 aircraft—including planes and helicopters—battled multiple sections of the blaze. However, the winds repeatedly hampered the deployment of firefighting aircraft.
Residents of several coastal towns were forced to evacuate their homes, while emergency personnel also transported people to safety by sea. The fire destroyed agricultural land and damaged numerous buildings. During the firefighting operations, two helicopters collided in the Psatha region. A Greek national and a Danish national lost their lives in the crash, while the crew of the second helicopter survived.
Two Arrests Following Technical Findings
Authorities arrested the owner of the construction company involved and the person technically responsible for the power line project. Both are under investigation for several serious offenses, including forest arson with conditional intent, endangering human lives, and severe property damage. However, the presumption of innocence applies to the accused.
The investigation is now focusing on the planning, construction, monitoring, and operation of the private power line. Consequently, the key issue is not the wind turbine itself, but the technical execution of its grid connection. The forest fire in Greece thus illustrates the potential consequences of defects in electrical infrastructure under dry and windy conditions. However, the judicial authorities have yet to determine who is responsible for any errors that may have caused the fire.
