A major fire broke out at a battery and electrical appliance recycling facility in Emsdetten on August 31, 2026. The main firefighting operations were concluded after approximately two hours.

The major fire on August 31 is not the first significant blaze at a recycling facility on Gutenbergstraße. A serious fire occurred there back in 2019. Following that incident, the company and authorities revised the fire safety plan. Measures included creating additional firefighting water reserves and establishing smaller fire compartments. Areas containing electronic waste were also subjected to stricter monitoring.
In August 2025, stored waste materials caught fire again at a company site on Gutenbergstraße. At that time, the flames spread to a container holding electronic waste. No one was injured in that incident either. This history adds significance to the current fire; however, the cause of the present blaze cannot be inferred from the earlier events.
Infrared cameras designed to detect dangerous temperature rises
Following previous fires, the company installed infrared cameras in particularly sensitive areas. These are intended to detect unusual temperature spikes at an early stage. According to the City of Emsdetten, large quantities of firefighting water were also kept in reserve, and containment systems were created for contaminated runoff. These measures were designed to limit the risk of rapid fire spread.
It is not yet known whether any of these systems played a role in the current fire. However, the fire department managed to bring the blaze under control relatively quickly.
