Being prepared doesn’t have to be complicated. The best preparation doesn’t rely on specialized equipment, but rather on items that are useful in everyday life. Regularly consuming and replenishing your supplies helps avoid expired food and unnecessary costs. The goal isn’t panic, but rather the ability to take action if supermarkets, ATMs, the internet, and heating systems suddenly stop working as usual.
1. Water: The Most Important Supply
Drinking water is the top priority. A good rule of thumb is at least two liters of fluid per person per day. For ten days, that amounts to 20 liters per person; a family of four would therefore need around 80 liters. If space is limited, you can start with a three-day supply and gradually build it up.
Using several small bottles or canisters is practical. They are easier to store, carry, and swap out than large containers. Collapsible water canisters can also be useful if you need to collect water from a central distribution point. Water filters are merely a supplement; they do not replace a supply of drinking water.
2. Food and cooking without electricity
Your food supply should not require refrigeration. Suitable items include canned goods, rice, pasta, rolled oats, crispbread, nuts, UHT milk, shelf-stable ready meals, and foods the household already uses. A manual can opener is essential.
A camping stove with compatible fuel canisters is suitable for preparing hot meals. It must only be used safely and in a well-ventilated area. Charcoal grills, gas grills, and open fires must never be used indoors; the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning is life-threatening.
3. Lighting, backup power, and information
Candles can help, but they should not be the primary solution. LED lights, headlamps, and batteries are safer options. Power banks should be kept charged and ready for use. A car radio or a hand-crank radio can also become important if internet and mobile network services fail.
Warning apps and cell broadcast systems only work as long as mobile networks remain operational. During a widespread power outage, however, this connectivity cannot be guaranteed. Therefore, a radio that operates independently of the power grid is an essential item. In addition, printed copies of important phone numbers, addresses, meeting points, and local contact locations should be kept on hand.
4. Warmth, Medication, and Hygiene
Many heating systems require electricity, even if they run on gas, oil, or pellets. Without power, pumps, control systems, and ignition mechanisms often fail to operate. Warm clothing, blankets, sleeping bags, and a shared living area can significantly reduce heat loss.
Preparedness measures include personal medication, first-aid supplies, painkillers, disinfectants, disposable gloves, and hygiene products. Wet wipes, trash bags, paper towels, and a simple emergency toilet can become essential if mains water or sewage disposal services are disrupted.
5. Cash, documents, and plans
In the event of a power outage, card payments, ATMs, and many point-of-sale systems do not function reliably. Keeping some cash in small denominations is therefore part of emergency preparedness. Equally important are copies of key documents, a list of medications, and insurance papers.
Organization remains the most important factor. Who will look after elderly relatives? Where will the family meet if phones are down? Which neighbors might need help? A blackout is not merely a technical issue; it quickly becomes a practical test of resilience for the entire household.
Preparing for these five areas reduces dependency and ensures you remain capable of taking action, even when electricity, water, communication services, and shopping facilities are temporarily unavailable.
