Arson in Reutlingen: Power outage following fire at substation affects 20,000 customers

A fire at the Reutlingen-West substation triggered a widespread power outage in Reutlingen around 1:45 a.m. on Monday. Investigators are looking into suspected arson after discovering three separate points of origin, a damaged fence, and traces on the premises. The outage affected approximately 20,000 Fairnetz GmbH customers, leaving parts of Reutlingen as well as areas in Wannweil and Kirchentellinsfurt without electricity. Hospitals, nursing homes, and services such as telephone, internet, and traffic lights reported disruptions. Preliminary estimates also indicate damage amounting to millions of euros. Arson hits a key node in the power grid

Netze BW sees concrete indications of a deliberate act. Consequently, fire investigation experts are examining the damaged facility and securing evidence at several locations. The Baden-Württemberg State Criminal Police Office has taken over the investigation.

The affected site plays a key role in the regional power grid. Substations distribute energy to downstream grid levels; consequently, a fire at such a node can disconnect entire city districts from the power supply.

Power outage impacts traffic, communications, and households

Power was restored only gradually throughout the morning. After approximately five and a half hours, Fairnetz had reconnected about half of the affected customers. However, the outage lasted longer for several thousand households.

Traffic was also affected; traffic lights failed, requiring police to direct traffic at key intersections. Disruptions to telephone and internet services further complicated efforts to keep the public informed.

Aid organizations safeguard critical facilities

The German Red Cross (DRK) and Malteser mobilized more than 50 volunteers. Additionally, the city established an operations command center at the Civil Protection Center in Pfullingen, where a senior emergency physician assisted with coordination.

The response focused on individuals requiring immediate assistance during a power outage, such as those in need of care, patients, and medical facilities. Hospitals and nursing homes therefore received special attention.

Millions in Damages and Indefinite Duration of Outage

According to initial reports, property damage amounts to several million euros. There was no reliable estimate available at the outset regarding when full service would be restored. Grid operators must inspect, secure, and replace damaged equipment.

The incident highlights the vulnerability of critical infrastructure. Arson at a substation can simultaneously affect households, care facilities, hospitals, communications, and transport. For Reutlingen, the stability of backup operations will now determine when normal service can resume.
