Halberstadt, August 26, 2026 – Production operations at the historic site of the famous Halberstadt sausages have failed. Halberstädter Konserven GmbH is ceasing business operations permanently. Production has been at a standstill since early June, and all remaining employees have since received termination notices. At the start of the most recent insolvency proceedings, 152 workers were affected. This latest crisis was preceded by a funding gap regarding a major order and a significant investment backlog. Furthermore, the search for an investor proved unsuccessful, while employees are still waiting for their pay for May. Consequently, the future of the well-known brand remains uncertain.
Restructuring Fails After Renewed Insolvency
However, the financial difficulties date back much further. As early as late 2024, the Magdeburg District Court opened insolvency proceedings for Halberstädter Konserven GmbH. In January 2026, the court terminated the proceedings following the approval of an insolvency plan. Just a few months later, Halberstädter Würstchen once again faced acute liquidity problems.

According to the company, a key trigger was the loss of a crucial financing component for a major order, which created a new funding gap. Operations were also strained by rising costs for energy, meat, and personnel. The market for canned sausages is considered both fiercely competitive and in decline; consequently, production was halted in early June.
No buyer found for Halberstadt sausages
The Nitsch family, the company’s owners, had already announced their withdrawal from the production business in April, prompting a search for a buyer for both the operations and the brand. According to the insolvency administrator, there were actually two interested parties in June, but no quick takeover materialized. This was partly because the real estate and key production facilities were not fully owned by the insolvent production company.
There was also a significant backlog of necessary investments at the site. Insolvency administrator Karina Schwarz pointed to several failed restructuring attempts over recent years; even debt waivers by creditors proved insufficient to achieve lasting stability. Ultimately, no investor was found. The buildings used for operations are now set to revert to the owning family.
Employees lose jobs and await outstanding pay
The failure has immediate consequences for the workforce. All remaining employees received termination notices, though the exact number of staff still employed at the time of closure is unknown, as some had already found other jobs. Additionally, the works council had disbanded prior to the final shutdown.
The financial situation is also difficult for former employees. As early as late June, broadcaster MDR reported that wages had been outstanding since May. Initially, the affected workers did not receive insolvency benefits. While partial unemployment benefits were paid for June, other claims remained unsettled. Even after the final closure, former employees are still waiting for their May wages.
Future of the heritage brand remains uncertain
However, the closure of the manufacturing company does not automatically spell the end of the brand. The Nitsch family retains the trademark rights. Furthermore, since 2010, “Halberstädter Würstchen” has held EU status as a Protected Geographical Indication (PGI). Consequently, products sold under this name must originate from Halberstadt; simply relocating production to another facility is therefore not an option.
Nevertheless, Halberstadt Mayor Daniel Szarata believes a resumption of production is possible. This would, however, require finding a new investor capable of integrating the site, facilities, and trademark rights into a viable business plan. Until then, the production tradition in Halberstadt—which spans over 140 years—remains on hold, even though the previous manufacturing operation has permanently ceased.
