Microplastics from wind turbines: EU Commission officially acknowledges plastic abrasion for the first time

Brussels – The EU Commission has officially acknowledged for the first time that wind turbines emit plastic particles and that this abraded material enters the environment unchecked. This admission came in response to an inquiry by Austrian MEP Gerald Hauser, who had cited an estimate of up to 62 kilograms of microplastics per wind turbine annually. While the Commission does not adopt this specific figure, it explicitly confirms the occurrence of plastic abrasion, citing scientific studies to support this. This officially confirms a previously overlooked source of environmental pollution—ironically associated with a method of electricity generation that is politically regarded as particularly environmentally friendly.


Microplastics from wind turbines are thus no longer a theoretical problem

The crucial passage in the Commission’s response is unusually clear-cut. It states: “Studies show that plastic emissions from wind turbines are far lower than those from other sources.” Brussels is therefore no longer debating whether wind turbines release plastic; instead, the Commission is simply putting the quantity into perspective by comparing it with tires, paints, or textiles.

It is precisely this point that alters the assessment from an environmental policy perspective. Unlike coal or gas-fired power plants, wind turbines do not emit combustion exhaust gases during operation. Nevertheless, this does not make them emission-free industrial facilities. Rain, hail, and dirt strike the coated rotor blades at high speeds. This causes erosion, particularly on the leading edges, resulting in the loss of plastic material from the protective layers.

The 62-kilogram figure remains disputed—but the fact that abrasion occurs does not

The figure of 62 kilograms per turbine cited by Hauser is based on a Norwegian projection. The Commission does not explicitly confirm this number. However, it does not dismiss the fact that material is released; instead, it points to other studies showing lower values. A study by DTU from 2026 estimates that, under unfavorable conditions, up to 340 grams of microplastics are released per rotor blade annually. With three rotor blades, this would mathematically amount to around one kilogram per turbine.

Other calculations yield different results. A DTU study published in 2024 determined plastic loss of between 80 and 1,000 grams per blade per year for offshore turbines. In contrast, a 2025 TNO calculation estimated around 240 grams annually for a modern 15-megawatt offshore turbine. Consequently, the exact scale remains uncertain. However, none of these studies dispute the fact that plastic is worn away from the rotor blades.


Even maintenance work releases additional plastic particles

There is also a second pathway for emissions. During repairs, technicians sand down damaged surfaces and work on composite materials. A study by the Technical University of Denmark estimates the resulting plastic emissions at 40 to 160 grams per blade per year for onshore turbines. For offshore turbines, the estimates range from 90 to 600 grams. Thus, microplastics are generated not only through weathering but also during maintenance.

It is therefore noteworthy that the EU is now calling for more extensive investigations. A Horizon Europe program requires field measurements regarding the environmental impact of offshore wind farms during operation, maintenance, and decommissioning. The call for proposals explicitly mentions the generation of plastic particles associated with large numbers of wind turbines. Furthermore, the potential cumulative effects of massive offshore expansion are to be investigated. In doing so, the EU acknowledges that key aspects of the environmental footprint have not yet been fully assessed.

The conclusion to be drawn is not that wind power should be equated across the board with coal or gas. Conventional power plants generate significant additional emissions due to the fuels they use. However, the political portrayal of wind power as a virtually “clean” source of electricity is also inadequate. For fossil-fuel power plants, pollutant emissions, filtration technology, and regulatory limits have been the focus of oversight for decades. In contrast, the systematic analysis of material emissions from wind turbines is only just beginning. The Commission’s official admission now highlights this gap.
