Two automotive suppliers on the brink of collapse in one day – over 1,000 jobs at Bohai and Schlote are at risk

In Harzgerode, Wernigerode, Sömmerda, and Brandenburg, two insolvent automotive suppliers are facing operational collapse. On April 28th, it was announced that crucial rescue attempts for the Bohai Trimet Group and the Schlote Group could fail. Major clients are withdrawing orders, while takeover talks have so far yielded no solution. This puts more than 1,000 direct jobs at risk. In addition, around 650 more jobs in the region are economically dependent on Bohai. (t-online: 28.04.26)

Major customers withdraw important orders

At Bohai, the withdrawal of a major customer is the main focus. This customer will no longer have essential components manufactured in Harzgerode and Sömmerda starting this fall. Without these orders, the plants lack a viable economic foundation.

The wave of bankruptcies continues to gain momentum: At Bohai Trimet and Schlote, more than 1,000 jobs and several plants are in acute danger.

Previously, three interested parties had negotiated a takeover of Bohai. However, no agreement was reached. The state of Saxony-Anhalt, the city of Harzgerode, and other entities had pledged their support.

Around 700 Bohai employees affected

Bohai employs nearly 700 people. According to the insolvency administrator, another 650 jobs at regional companies also depend on the supplier. The consequences therefore extend far beyond the factory gates.

The situation is also worsening at Schlote. Customers intend to source ordered automotive parts from other suppliers in the future. Around 330 employees at GAW Wernigerode, Schlote Harzgerode, and Schlote Brandenburg are affected.

Creditors’ decision still pending

For about a year, both companies have received support from customers and clients to continue operating. This support has amounted to tens of millions of euros. However, this assistance is apparently no longer sufficient.

In the case of Bohai, four creditors’ committees must decide on the next steps. This decision could be reached as early as the end of next week. The creditors’ committee must also approve the insolvency proceedings for Schlote.

Plant in Brandenburg already being phased out

The situation is particularly critical in Brandenburg an der Havel. Production there is already being phased out. The plant is expected to close in the fall.

This case also illustrates the deep crisis facing many automotive suppliers. When large customers shift orders, small and medium-sized enterprises quickly lose their footing. For the Harz region, this double insolvency therefore represents a massive risk to industrial jobs.
