Brandenburg prepares for blackout

Brandenburg plans to build around 300 “disaster control lighthouses” in preparation for longer power outages. These lighthouses are said to cost around 40 million euros and will not only provide electricity, but also information and water (Spiegel: 03.06.23).

Brandenburg prepares for blackout: construction of 308 civil protection lighthouses

In order to be prepared for possible long-lasting power failures, Brandenburg is planning to build around 300 contact points for the population. The Ministry of the Interior is currently working together with the districts and urban districts on the implementation of this project. The contact points are referred to as “disaster control beacons”. The state of Brandenburg is providing more than 40 million euros for this. Interior Minister Michael Stübgen (CDU) announced last year that Brandenburg would like to prepare better for possible blackouts.

Brandenburg is planning the construction of a total of 308 contact points to support the population in the event of a possible long-lasting power failure. These focal points, also referred to as “disaster management beacons,” will provide critical resources and support. In the event of a major power failure, people will be able to get up-to-date information on the situation there. In addition, they will have access to drinking water, first aid and facilities to heat food and charge their mobile phones. Especially in winter, these facilities can serve as heat islands to protect people from the cold.

A number of contact points for disasters have already been set up in Berlin to serve as models for the project in Brandenburg (Blackout-News: 27.07.23). The Ministry of the Interior is currently working closely with the districts and urban districts to promote the implementation of the contact points. Conversion measures and the procurement of the necessary equipment are taken into account.

The state of Brandenburg is providing more than 40 million euros to enable the construction and equipment of the civil protection beacons. Interior Minister Michael Stübgen (CDU) announced last year that Brandenburg would like to prepare better for possible blackouts. With this project, the citizens of the country should be better protected and supported if there are longer power outages.

Tailor-made civil protection lighthouses for quick help and supplies

The planned contact points are distributed after careful consideration. The population structure and the area of the districts are taken into account. This is how most contact points are to be created in the district of Potsdam-Mittelmark, where a total of 22 civil protection lighthouses are planned. In the Oberspreewald-Lausitz district, on the other hand, there should be 15 contact points. Such a distribution can ensure that the facilities are accessible to as many people as possible and that adequate care is guaranteed.

With the implementation of the civil protection flagships in Brandenburg, the state is taking an important step towards being prepared for possible crisis situations. This measure represents an investment in the safety and well-being of the population in order to be able to offer them fast and effective help in times of need.
