Renault plans to cut 15 to 20 percent of its engineering positions worldwide over the next two years. This could result in the elimination of up to 2,400 jobs. The cuts will affect a division currently employing around 11,000 to 12,000 engineers. The French automaker is responding to growing pressure from Chinese manufacturers in key markets, primarily due to their cost and development time advantages. At the same time, CEO François Provost is implementing a fundamental restructuring to enable Renault to develop vehicles significantly faster. The new Twingo serves as an example, its development time having been reduced to 21 months through collaboration with engineers in China. (wiwo: 14.04.26)
Renault Responds to the Lead of Chinese Manufacturers
Chinese car brands have been increasing the pressure on European manufacturers for years. They often bring new models to market faster and operate at lower costs. This advantage is directly impacting Renault in its most important markets. Therefore, the company is now taking action regarding personnel and processes.

The cuts come at a time of major upheaval. François Provost had already announced a far-reaching corporate restructuring last month. Now it’s becoming clear how profound this intervention will be. Renault not only wants to change structures, but also fundamentally realign its development processes.
Fewer engineers, but faster processes
According to a spokesperson, the number of engineers worldwide is to be reduced by 15 to 20 percent. Based on the current workforce, this translates to a reduction of up to 2,400 positions. The measure therefore affects a core area of the company. This very fact demonstrates how seriously Renault is taking the situation.
At its core, however, it’s not just about cost-cutting. Renault wants to massively accelerate vehicle development. To this end, the company is explicitly orienting itself towards Chinese working methods. These are considered in the industry to be more streamlined, faster, and more focused on shorter cycles. Renault is therefore linking the staff reduction to a restructuring of its development organization.
The new Twingo serves as a model for the transformation
The new Twingo demonstrates just how significantly this approach is changing processes. Through collaboration with Chinese engineers at its research and development center in China, Renault was able to reduce development time to 21 months. This is a very short period for a new vehicle. At the same time, the project provides management with concrete evidence that the new strategy is working.
This acceleration is of strategic importance to Renault. Companies that launch models later than their competitors quickly lose market share in fierce competition. This is especially true when rivals produce more cheaply and react more quickly to trends. Renault therefore wants to combat this disadvantage at its source.
The job cuts thus represent more than just a classic cost-cutting measure. Renault is adapting its development model to global competition. The decisive risk factor remains the lead held by Chinese manufacturers in speed and cost. While the company is focusing on more efficient processes, up to 2,400 engineers now face an uncertain future.
