Büren, August 2026 – A power outage affected the security area at Paderborn/Lippstadt Airport overnight into Monday. According to Westnetz, contamination on lines within the 110 kV high-voltage grid triggered the regional disruption. As a result, doors between public and restricted areas at the airport opened automatically. Consequently, police evacuated the terminal and searched all affected zones. Around 500 passengers subsequently had to check in again, while three flights were delayed by approximately 90 minutes.
Security zone no longer monitored following power outage
According to Westnetz, the grid fault occurred shortly before 2 a.m. Affected areas included Büren, Geseke, Salzkotten, Warstein, Belecke, and Rüthen. Protection systems automatically disconnected the overloaded lines. Westnetz subsequently rerouted power via other high-voltage connections and quickly restored the supply.

At the airport, however, the brief interruption had significant consequences. While emergency generators kicked in and systems such as emergency lighting remained operational, several doors opened automatically at the same time. This meant the secure area could no longer be clearly separated from the publicly accessible parts of the terminal.
Automatic door opening was part of the emergency protocol
According to the airport, the unlocking of the doors was not a technical malfunction. Rather, the system is designed to ensure that people can quickly exit the building in an emergency. Consequently, specific doors open automatically as soon as the regular power supply fails. WDR subsequently corrected an earlier report that had characterized the incident as a security breach.
Nevertheless, the situation created a major problem for airport operations. It was impossible to rule out with certainty that individuals had entered the secure area unchecked during the outage. Police therefore ordered the evacuation of the terminal and subsequently inspected the affected zones. Only then could passenger processing resume.
Brief Power Outage Causes Long Delays
Around 500 travelers had to go through check-in and security screening all over again. As a result, three flights were delayed by approximately an hour and a half. The actual power outage, however, was relatively brief. The airport did not fully return to normal operations until all security checks had been completed.
The grid failure also kept emergency services busy outside the airport. In Warstein, the fire department coordinated with city officials regarding potential emergency measures. However, it was not necessary to activate additional support centers for the public. According to the company, Westnetz is currently working on the affected high-voltage lines.
