Lindner wants to discuss the use of nuclear power

At the end of the year, the last three remaining nuclear power plants in Germany will finally be taken off the grid. Federal Finance Minister Christian Lindner now wants to discuss their continued use of nuclear power. This will add a lot of fuel to the fire in the new government with traffic lights. A return to nuclear power is unlikely to be possible with the Greens. Not even if the energy prices in the country become higher and higher for consumers.

Lindner wants to restart discussion on nuclear power plants

Despite the expected resistance in the coalition, Lindner wants to openly discuss a return to the use of nuclear power. He told Bild: “People expect all options to be considered because of climate protection, dependence on Putin and inflation. Germany must not close its mind to a debate that is being held all over the world. I advise putting the arguments on the table without prejudice.”

Lindner wants to discuss the use of nuclear power. Habeck immediately rejects Lindner's request and declares the phase-out to be free of ideology.

Habeck immediately rejects Lindner’s request and declares exit to be free of ideology

Economics Minister Habeck immediately countered with the words: “There is not much more to be said about nuclear energy. The issue was examined again at the beginning of the legislative period, free of ideology and technical issues. The decision was made by the ministries – and politically as well. This is not a path that Germany will continue to take. However, Habeck fails to mention that several experts have already complained massively that they were not included in the decisions of the Economics and Environment Ministries. The decision was by no means as free of ideology as Habeck emphasises.

BUND also opposes the extension of operating times

The Bund für Umwelt und Naturschutz Deutschland (BUND) also immediately responded to Lindner’s statement. Antje von Broock, executive director of BUND, explained that an extension of the operating times would be associated with high costs and would entail irresponsible safety risks. In BUND’s view, both would be out of proportion to the additional and comparatively small amounts of electricity.

The last three nuclear power plants will finally be taken off the grid at the end of the year

Currently, only the nuclear power plants Isar 2, Emsland and Neckarwestheim 2 are still producing electricity in Germany. At the end of December, the operators must finally shut down the last three nuclear power plants.
