The final closure of Maxhütte in Sulzbach-Rosenberg has shaken the region. Around 300 employees are losing their jobs after the last rescue attempt failed. The historic plant has stood for the steel industry and economic strength in Upper Palatinate for more than 150 years. (sueddeutsche: 01.09.25)
Insolvency No Way Out
For months, the administration searched for investors, but the insolvency left no hope of rescue. Insolvency administrator Jochen Zaremba explained that the ownership situation was the biggest obstacle. The land and facilities were not owned by the insolvent company, but by the owner. Since the owner’s asking price far exceeded the offers of potential buyers, all negotiations failed.

The workforce was granted leave. Discussions with the works council regarding a social plan are underway, followed by layoffs. This means that secure jobs are being lost for many families in Sulzbach-Rosenberg. The region must now reorient itself.
Historical Significance of Maxhütte
Maxhütte has experienced several serious crises in its history. As early as 2002, a protracted insolvency led to its closure. At that time, the plant was spun off, restructured, and continued under new management.
But the problems returned. In 2022, another insolvency proceeding began, in which at least an investor stepped in. Nevertheless, another insolvency followed in 2024, which now led to the final closure. For the people of Sulzbach-Rosenberg, this means a massive loss of jobs and prospects.
Symbol of the German Steel Industry
For many decades, Maxhütte was considered one of the most well-known steelworks in Germany. Thousands of employees worked there, and the region strongly identified with the steel industry. The plant shaped not only the economy but also social life.
The Bavarian state government attempted to secure the company’s continued existence with approximately €250 million. The state even became a co-owner in some cases. But even this massive aid could not prevent the recurring insolvency. Maxhütte is thus a prime example of how severely the German steel industry is suffering from global competitive pressure.
A bitter end for Sulzbach-Rosenberg
The final closure marks the end of a long tradition. For more than 150 years, the Maxhütte steelworks shaped the region. Today, a gap remains that is difficult to fill, not only economically but also culturally.
Sulzbach-Rosenberg is now facing profound structural change. Jobs in the steel industry are no longer considered secure, and many families must find new ways forward. The Maxhütte insolvency illustrates how profoundly globalization and relocation can transform entire regions.
