In the Japanese prefecture of Hokkaido, the energy supplier Hokkaido Electric Power (also known as “Hokuden”) has announced a significant reduction in electricity prices. Following the planned restart of the reactor unit at the Tomari nuclear power plant, the tariff for households is expected to decrease by approximately eleven percent. The population will thus benefit from lower energy costs, increased confidence in regional nuclear policy, and guaranteed security of supply. (hokkaido-np: 29.10.25)
Significant relief for Hokkaido
Other Japanese regions have consistently reduced their rates noticeably after reactor restarts, although usually only by a single-digit percentage. Hokkaido is now sending an above-average signal. Despite safety expenditures of approximately 289 million euros, the Japanese energy provider continues to promise lower energy costs.

This tariff adjustment also serves the goal of building confidence in the energy supply in Japan.
Tariff Reduction Strengthens Acceptance
The announced reduction in electricity prices promotes acceptance of the nuclear power plant restart. Expectations are particularly high in Hokkaido Prefecture, as consumers have been hoping for relief for years. An average saving of approximately 0.61 euros per household is a small but clear step towards sustainable energy security. The utility company’s decision also supports a positive image of nuclear policy and nuclear energy.
Positive Momentum in the Energy Market
Following reactor restarts in Japan, tariffs have consistently decreased – albeit usually only moderately. This development is particularly pronounced in Hokkaido. With the restored power supply, the energy provider aims to stabilize the regional grid. At the same time, local businesses also benefit financially from the price adjustment.
Hokkaido as an example of the energy transition
The recent decision represents a responsible energy policy. The Japanese prefecture is thus combining financial stability, security of supply, and a well-considered return to nuclear energy. The noticeable reduction in electricity prices demonstrates that responsible energy supply can create economic advantages.
