A severe storm struck the Westerwald region and other parts of northern Rhineland-Palatinate on August 19. At times, around 25,000 residential units were left without power, with outages affecting a total of 65 municipalities. Fallen trees damaged overhead lines, conductors, roof-mounted service masts, and domestic service connections. The numerous individual instances of damage to the low-voltage grid proved particularly complex to address. While a tornado struck Höhr-Grenzhausen, a woman died in the municipality of Waldorf (in the Ahrweiler district), which was also affected. The grid operator fully restored the power supply by the evening of August 22; however, many repairs remain merely provisional for the time being.
Westerwald: Power grid damaged in numerous locations
Energienetze Mittelrhein managed to reconnect a large number of properties to the grid as early as the first night. By August 20, around 90 percent of the previously affected residential units had their power restored. Nevertheless, some individual locations and buildings remained without service for longer periods. Consequently, technicians had to locate and repair the damage on-site in a step-by-step process.

Facilities with critical infrastructure were also affected. The Herz-Jesu Hospital and the St. Thomas Hospice in Dernbach had to rely on emergency power supplies for a time, though normal operations eventually resumed. Additionally, damaged buildings, fallen trees, and cordoned-off areas hampered the work of emergency crews.
250 transformer stations back online – isolated damage remained
By August 21, all approximately 250 affected transformer stations were back in operation, restoring full functionality to the medium-voltage grid. However, around 100 complex faults remained in the local distribution network and at individual service connections. These ranged from issues affecting just a single building to those impacting an entire street, meaning the remaining repairs took significantly longer to complete.
Snapped power lines and damaged roof-mounted service masts required particularly extensive repair work. While large sections of the grid could be reconnected relatively quickly through technical switching operations, this was not possible for individual building connections; consequently, specialists had to inspect many of the damaged sites in person. On Saturday evening, enm finally reported that power had been fully restored across the Westerwald region, although permanent repairs are still pending.
Tornado Hits Höhr-Grenzhausen Particularly Hard
Particularly severe damage occurred in Höhr-Grenzhausen and several surrounding municipalities. The storm tore off roofs, uprooted trees, and damaged building facades. It also struck Boden, Bannberscheid, and other locations in the Lower Westerwald region. The European Severe Weather Database later confirmed that a tornado had hit the area. During the cleanup operations, certain roads, playgrounds, and other areas remained closed for safety reasons.
Although power has since been restored everywhere, the work of repairing the damage is far from over. In the coming weeks, the grid operator must carry out permanent repairs on lines and connections that were only temporarily fixed. Additionally, further securing and cleanup operations are underway in the affected municipalities. The importance of preparedness for prolonged outages was demonstrated just a few days earlier in Staudt, where the municipality had—coincidentally, right before the storm—run a simulation of a long-term power outage.
